Traineeship at the EFTA Secretariat - Trade Relations Division

The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is an intergovernmental organisation set up for the promotion of free trade and economic integration between its four Member States: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The EFTA Secretariat provides services to the EFTA States.

A traineeship for 5 months starting the 1st of March 2021 in the Trade Relations Division (TRD) at the EFTA Secretariat in Geneva is open for applications.

The aim of the traineeship is to provide civil servants and other qualified applicants opportunities for training and familiarisation with the work of the EFTA Secretariat in the area of free trade agreements.

The Trade Relations Division (TRD) has responsibilities for the exploration, negotiation and implementation of preferential trade arrangements with non-EU partner countries.

The trainee will be assigned to specific tasks of monitoring and implementation of current free trade agreements, communication and information on free trade agreements and amendments to free trade agreements namely in the area of trade in goods, including customs issues.

• Master's or Bachelor degree preferably in international relations, economy or law, or professional qualification in customs matters;
• Knowledge of standard office IT applications (Microsoft Office).


Work experience of at least 2 years in a relevant governmental service or similar experience.


• An analytical mind with ability to do relevant research and prepare documents in English;
• A flexible and motivated team player capable of taking on a variety of tasks;
• An interest in communication and information is an asset.


• Fluency in both spoken and written English. 

Employment Terms

Traineeships at the EFTA Secretariat are open to nationals of the EFTA Member States (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland).

What we offer
• Trainees receive a flat monthly allowance of CHF 2,450; 
• Accommodation in an individual apartment is provided by EFTA;

• Reimbursement of travel costs upon taking up and leaving the traineeship.
