Deputy Head of the EFTA Statistical Office, Luxembourg

The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is an intergovernmental organisation set up for the promotion of free trade and economic integration to the benefit of its four Member States: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The EFTA Secretariat provides services to the EFTA States. The EFTA Statistical Office (ESO) in Luxembourg functions as a liaison office between the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) and the EFTA National Statistical Institutes (NSIs), coordinating cooperation in the field of statistics both within and outside the European Economic Area (EEA).

We are looking for a highly motivated and qualified candidate who is willing to take on a challenging post in a dynamic environment.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the coordination of EFTA-EU cooperation in the field of statistics. S/he will service the Working Group of EFTA Heads of NSIs, as well as various EFTA and EEA bodies. This includes facilitating and monitoring the implementation of EU law into EEA legislation; liaison activities with Eurostat and international organisations, participating in the technical assistance projects for third countries and in the European Statistical Training Programme (ESTP); and representing EFTA in international high-level meetings in the European Statistical System (ESS) and third-country relations.


  • Higher university degree in the field of economics, social sciences, statistics or related disciplines with a strong focus on statistical methods and applications.


  • Several years of professional experience in production of official statistics (national or international);
  • Solid knowledge of the ESS, of EU and EEA decision making processes and of EEA legislation in the field of statistics.


  • Excellent organisational and communication skills;
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to find solutions;
  • Ability to see the needs of partners and the organisation and to take coordinated initiative;
  • Ability to draft reports and notes concisely and clearly in English;
  • Self-reliance, autonomy and a facility for teamwork in a task-oriented environment;
  • Ability to represent the organisation and to create relations and contacts.


  • Professional working proficiency in English at a high level;
  • Knowledge of other EU or EFTA languages would be an asset.

Employment Terms

Grade: A5
Annual salary: EUR 125,553

Appointments are normally made at the first step of the grade. The Secretary-General reserves the right to appoint a candidate at a level different from that advertised.  Through its recruitment policy, the EFTA Secretariat wants to ensure diversity in terms of gender, age and culture.

EFTA is an international organisation and the salaries and related payments are normally exempt from income taxation by the EFTA States and the host states of the EFTA duty stations. Depending on the candidate’s family status, benefits and allowances may apply.
